Cat’s Commitment to Excellence Award – Wild Willie
 
This award is given to the person within the organization who goes above and beyond the call of duty. Wild Willie is one of the hardest working mascots in the QMJHL. Whether he is in the crowd cheering or at a community event this is one Cat who is committed to winning.

 

Leading Goal Scorer: Scott Brannon

Scott finished the season with 34 goals, many of them bullet drives from the right wing. In the last month of the season, it was a see-saw battle between Scott, Tomy Joly and Matt Eagles, but number 27 came through to capture the goal scoring title.  He also added 20 assists for a total of 54 points in the 66 games he played.

 

The Donnie Matheson Memorial Scholastic Award: Nicola Riopel

Nicola maintained an outstanding study average in the courses taken at the Universite de Moncton. Like the other nominees, he is considered an outstanding student and as the record reflects h is play with the Wildcats this season has been outstanding.   He was also the team’s nominee for the League Scholastic Award

 

Unsung Hero Award: Zach Sill

The big veteran centre gives new meaning to the word dependable.  You could call him a human wrecking ball.  Back checker, fore checker, puck chasing fanatic, might come close to describing the contribution he’s made to the Wildcats.

 

Most Improved Player: David Savard

He came to the Wildcats in a mid-season trade with Baie-Comeau last year. He’s established himself as one of the outstanding defensemen in the Q in his second year in the league. His totals with the Wildcats this season, nine goals and 35 assists, with a plus/minus of 29.  Fans, coaches and scouts are continually impressed with his intelligent approach and growth as a blueliner with a future.

 

Outstanding Defensive Player: Nicola Riopel

He’s been the king pin of the Wildcats great defensive play the entire season.  With records for games won, fewest goals against and best save percentage average.  His preparation is one of the keys to his success and his dedication to improving his netminding skills have been applauded by everyone.

 

Community Spirit Award: Matt Eagles

Team Captain Matt Eagles has shown his leadership in community activity since he became a member of the Wildcats four seasons ago.  Matt has been front and centre in his support of Hockey Ministries International, Pink in the Rink, Reading is Wild, hospital visits and being an eloquent spokesperson for the Wildcats, on and off the ice.

 

Rookie of the Year: Brandon Gormley

The Wildcats first pick overall in last June’s draft, Brandon has shown his multi-playing talents during his first Q season. In 62 games, he scored seven goals, added 27 assists for a 34 point total, with a plus/minus of nine.  Whether it’s playing the point on the power-play or keeping opposition snipers at bay on the penalty kill, #3 does it all with the ease and poise of a veteran. 

 

Top Points Leader Award: Matt Eagles

Team Captain Matt Eagles, played all 68 games this season as he finished up four seasons with the Wildcats.  Dangerous on offence and a force to reckoned as a never give up back checker, Matt scored 29 goals, the 29th in Sunday’s final game of the regular season.  He set up 36 others for a total of 65 giving him the points leader title.

 

Children’s Wish Foundation Fans Choice Award: Matt Eagles

The fans have spoken and they have picked the team Captain Matt Eagles as the player they felt brought 100 per cent to every game, showed leadership on and off the ice and electrified the fans with outstanding play.

 

Most Valuable Player Award: Nicola Riopel

It has been a season to be remembered for number 29.  His latest selection as as the QMJHL defensive player of the week came March 16th, making it eight for the season.  He was twice as the CHL’s goaltender of the week.  His 2.01 goals against average broke a Q record that had lasted for 11 years.  He demolished the Wildcats record of 35 victories in a season set by Corey Crawford in 2004-2005, with an astounding 43 wins.  The Wildcats record of 149 goals against for the season is further evidence of Rio’s spectacular goal tending.

His performance has been a major factor in the win-loss column throughout the season.  He’s won the admiration of his team-mates, coaches and fans for his contribution to the success of the Wildcats this year.
